5 Tips for Choosing the Right Cosmetic Surgeon

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Cosmetic SurgeonMaybe you are still deciding if cosmetic surgery is the right choice for you. Or perhaps you know exactly what procedure you want to have done or what result you want to try to achieve. Either way, the biggest decision you will make will be choosing the right cosmetic surgeon to achieve your dreams. Be sure to make the choice that makes the most sense by doing your homework ahead of time, while keeping yourself safe and happy through the process.

Here are 5 simple, but telling ways to help guide you with your decision of which surgeon to select:

1. Be sure the surgeon is board-certified.

This seems simple, but just because they say they are “board-certified” doesn’t mean that it is through the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Plastic surgeons certified by the ABPS are specially trained and uniquely qualified to perform cosmetic and/or reconstructive surgery. You can do a quick search for your surgeon by visiting the ABPS website and verify their state license(s).

2. Find out what hospital privileges the surgeon has.

If the surgery you plan on having must be performed in a medical facility, rather than at a standard office visit, you will want to know ahead of time. Hospitals will generally do background checks on doctors they allow into their facility so understanding your surgeon’s hospital affiliations will give you a little more peace of mind. To find out what hospitals your surgeon has worked with, you can check out Federation of State Medical Boards: http://www.fsmb.org

3. Be leery of surgeons suggesting additional procedures you didn’t ask for.

Getting a professional opinion on the best way to achieve the results you want  is different than being upsold on additional procedures you do not ask for, or even need. Come to your consultation with your surgeon with your goals in mind. This will allow you to talk frankly with your surgeon, and should limit any suggested procedures you weren’t looking to have done.

4. Check out testimonials from previous patients.

Well respected surgeons will have several satisfied patients that want to share their experience with anyone that will listen. See if the surgeon you are looking into has these glowing reviews about his work. Be on the lookout for negative reviews as well, how a surgeon responds to a negative outcome is just as telling as the review itself.

5. Ask questions.

Don’t be afraid to ask anything that has been on your mind during this process. Surgeons that perform the procedure you are looking into enough, will be ready and able to answer whatever you can throw at them. Remember you need to be comfortable enough with them so they can help you achieve your goals.

Since choosing a surgeon is one of the most important (if not the most important) parts of deciding to have cosmetic surgery, you will want to be prepared. The research you do now could save you time, money and your happiness in the end.
